Martin House Receives Parks and Trails NY Grant

Martin House News
August 05, 2020

The Martin House Restoration Corporation is pleased to announce that it has received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from Parks and Trails New York. Funds will be used to support the care and management of the extraordinary collections of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House.

With the assistance of a curatorial intern, a project is now underway to document the Martin House collections by creating a consistent, accurate, fully illustrated, and searchable database. This collections management system will serve as an online portal providing improved access to these important cultural assets—now and well into the future. Highlights include an extensive collection of Wright-designed art glass and furniture, as well as fine groupings of Japanese woodcut prints, decorative art objects, and personal items once owned by the Martin Family.

Located in the heart of the city of Buffalo, the Martin House is a significant turning point in the evolution of Wright’s Prairie House concept and is considered one of the most important works of the first half of the architect’s career. Wright himself referred to the Martin House as “the opus.” Today, the Martin House stands as a National Historic Landmark, as well as the flagship museum in the network of New York State Historic Sites.

Parks and Trails New York is the leading statewide advocate dedicated to enhancing the preservation, stewardship, interpretation, maintenance, and promotion of New York’s parks, trails, state historic sites, and public lands.
